How random team generation works

Fair teams start with a fair shuffle. This tool uses the Fisher–Yates shuffle: it walks through your list of names from last to first, swapping each name with a randomly chosen name from the unshuffled portion. After one pass, every possible ordering of the names is equally likely — no name is more likely to land at the top of the list than any other. That single unbiased shuffle is the whole secret; everything after it is just dealing.

The method, step by step

1. Paste your names, one per line. 2. Choose your split — either a number of teams (4 teams) or a team size (5 players per team). 3. Shuffle and deal round-robin. The shuffled list is dealt like cards: name 1 to Team A, name 2 to Team B, name 3 to Team C, name 4 to Team D, name 5 back to Team A, and so on until the list is empty. Round-robin dealing guarantees the teams differ by at most one player, which is the fairest possible split.

Worked example: 13 players into 3 teams

Suppose the shuffle produces this order: Sara, Omar, Lina, Ahmed, Noor, Karim, Huda, Tariq, Rana, Bilal, Dana, Sami, Noura. Dealing round-robin: Team A gets Sara, Ahmed, Huda, Rana, Dana (5 players); Team B gets Omar, Noor, Tariq, Bilal, Sami (5); Team C gets Lina, Karim, Noura (3). The remainder always lands on the earliest teams, so if you want the extra player to rotate, reshuffle and deal again.

Practical tips and limits

Random is blind to skill — if balanced teams matter more than random ones, deal first and then swap one or two players to even out strength. For tournaments, reshuffle between rounds so nobody can claim the draw favoured them. And remember the limitation: pure randomness cannot honour requests like keeping two rivals apart; for that, assign a few names manually first and randomise the rest.
