How do I count words in an essay online for free?
Paste or type your essay into the counter above. Words, characters, sentences, paragraphs and reading time appear instantly — no signup, nothing uploaded. For a professor’s limit, check whether the title and works-cited page count before trimming.
How do I check word count for a college essay online?
Use the counter above: paste your essay and compare the word total against your limit. Tip: draft about 10% over, then cut — for a 650-word limit, write roughly 715 words and trim the weakest sentences.
How does the word counter work?
Type or paste text into the editor. Every total updates instantly in your browser.
Does the character count include spaces?
You get both versions: the “Characters” total includes spaces and line breaks, while “Without spaces” removes all whitespace.
How is reading time estimated?
The estimate uses an average reading speed of 200 words per minute. Your actual time may vary with the complexity of the text.
Is my text uploaded or saved?
No. The counting happens locally in your browser. Your text is not uploaded or saved by this page.
Do hyphenated words count as one word or two?
One, in this counter and most others: the split happens on whitespace, so “well-known” is a single token. A few strict academic counters differ, so for dissertations check your institution's specific rule before trusting any tool.
How is speaking time different from reading time?
People speak (~130–150 words per minute) much slower than they silently read (~200–250 wpm). A 500-word script takes about 3.6 minutes to deliver but only 2.2 minutes to read — use the speaking estimate for presentations, voiceovers, and video scripts.
What are the character limits for X and Instagram?
X (Twitter) allows 280 characters per post; Instagram captions allow up to 2,200 characters. Paste your draft into the counter to check either limit instantly — the character-with-spaces figure is the one platforms enforce.
