Saudi Arabia's standard VAT rate is 15% since July 2020. Some supplies (basic healthcare, education, certain financial services) are exempt or zero-rated — this tool is an estimate, not tax advice.
Value Added Tax (VAT) is a consumption tax added to most goods and services in Saudi Arabia at a standard rate of 15%. Businesses registered with ZATCA (the Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority) charge VAT on sales and can reclaim VAT paid on business purchases.
Adding vs removing VAT
Add VAT: a shop price shown "before VAT" becomes price × 1.15. A 100 SAR item costs 115 SAR with VAT.
Remove VAT: a receipt showing a VAT-inclusive total hides the VAT. Divide by 1.15 to find the pre-VAT price: 115 ÷ 1.15 = 100 SAR, so 15 SAR was VAT.
Why reverse VAT matters
Businesses need the VAT-exclusive figure to claim input VAT on expenses and to check supplier invoices. Shoppers use it to compare real prices. Switch to "Remove VAT" mode above and enter any inclusive total.
Frequently asked questions
What is the VAT rate in Saudi Arabia?
Saudi Arabia applies a 15% Value Added Tax (VAT) on most goods and services since July 2020. Some items like basic healthcare and education are exempt or zero-rated.
How do I remove 15% VAT from a price?
Divide the VAT-inclusive price by 1.15 to get the VAT-exclusive price. The VAT amount is the difference. For example, 115 SAR inclusive → 115 ÷ 1.15 = 100 SAR exclusive, so VAT = 15 SAR.
How do I add 15% VAT to a price?
Multiply the VAT-exclusive price by 1.15. For example, 100 SAR exclusive × 1.15 = 115 SAR inclusive (VAT = 15 SAR).
Is this Saudi VAT calculator free?
Yes. It is 100% free with no signup required.
Can tourists get a VAT refund in Saudi Arabia?
Yes. Under ZATCA's Tourist VAT Refund Scheme, eligible tourists and GCC visitors can reclaim the 15% VAT on unused goods bought for personal use and taken out of the Kingdom, validated for export within 90 days of purchase. A minimum spend of SAR 500 per transaction applies, and food, fuel and hotel services are excluded.
What are the penalties for late VAT filing in Saudi Arabia?
ZATCA charges 5%–25% of the unpaid tax for late return filing, up to 50% of the underpaid amount for incorrect returns that cause a shortage, and fines of up to SAR 50,000 for failing to issue tax invoices. Checking your figures in a calculator like this one before filing helps avoid all of them.
What is the difference between zero-rated and exempt supplies?
Zero-rated supplies are taxed at 0% — exports, international transport and qualifying medicines, for example — and the business can still recover input VAT on related costs. Exempt supplies, such as residential rent and local passenger transport, sit outside VAT entirely: no VAT is charged, but input VAT on related costs generally cannot be recovered.
When did Saudi VAT rise to 15%?
On 1 July 2020, Saudi Arabia raised VAT from 5% to 15% as part of measures to support public finances. The 15% rate has applied to standard-rated goods and services ever since, and ZATCA administers registration, filing, and e-invoicing.
Which goods and services are exempt from Saudi VAT?
Exports and international transport are zero-rated at 0%. Certain categories — including some financial services, residential property rentals, and bare land — are exempt, meaning no VAT is charged. Everything else standard-rated carries the full 15%, which is what this calculator applies.
Do I need to register for VAT in Saudi Arabia?
Registration with ZATCA is mandatory if your annual taxable supplies exceed SAR 375,000. Below that threshold, small businesses may register voluntarily to reclaim input VAT. Once registered, you must file VAT returns, charge 15% on standard-rated sales, and issue compliant e-invoices.
How Saudi VAT is calculated
Value Added Tax in Saudi Arabia is a 15% consumption tax, raised from 5% on 1 July 2020 and administered by ZATCA (the Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority). It applies to most goods and services sold in the Kingdom, and businesses add it on top of their prices — which is why a shelf price and an invoice total often differ.
The formulas: adding vs removing VAT
Adding VAT: gross price = net price × 1.15. A SAR 200 item before tax sells for 200 × 1.15 = SAR 230. Removing VAT (finding the pre-tax price from a VAT-inclusive total): net price = gross ÷ 1.15, and the VAT portion = gross − net. The classic mistake is subtracting 15% from the gross: 230 − 15% = 195.50, which is wrong, because the 15% was calculated on the net figure, not the gross.
Worked example: reverse-engineering a SAR 230 receipt
Net = 230 ÷ 1.15 = SAR 200.00; VAT = 230 − 200 = SAR 30.00. Check: 200 × 0.15 = 30. √. This is the calculation businesses use dozens of times a day when reconciling VAT-inclusive supplier invoices against their accounting, which records everything net of tax.
Practical tips and limits
VAT registration is mandatory once your annual taxable supplies exceed SAR 375,000. Not everything is taxed at 15%: exports and international transport are zero-rated (0% VAT but the seller can still reclaim input VAT), while certain financial services, residential rentals, and bare land are exempt (no VAT charged and no input VAT reclaimed) — the calculator assumes the standard 15% rate, so zero-rated and exempt supplies need separate treatment. Always show VAT as its own line on invoices; ZATCA e-invoicing (Fatoora) requires it.
E-invoicing (Fatoora): what businesses must know
Since 2021, ZATCA has phased in mandatory e-invoicing: Phase 1 required electronic invoice generation, and Phase 2 (integration phase, rolled out in waves by business size) requires invoices to be transmitted to ZATCA in real time with cryptographic stamps and QR codes. Every compliant invoice must show the seller's VAT registration number, the invoice total, and the VAT amount as a separate line — exactly the gross/net/VAT split this calculator computes. Non-compliance carries fines, so if you issue invoices in the Kingdom, your accounting software — not a manual calculation — should be producing ZATCA-format invoices, with this calculator as your quick cross-check.
