Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate what I need on my final exam?

Subtract your weighted current grade from your target, then divide by the final's weight — done automatically above.

How are weighted grades calculated?

Each grade × its weight (as a decimal), summed up. E.g. 85% homework at 40% weight = 34 points.

What if the weights don't add to 100%?

The calculator normalizes weights automatically, so the result stays correct.

Is this grade calculator free?

Yes — 100% free, no signup, everything runs in your browser.

What if my teacher drops the lowest quiz score?

Remove that score before averaging the category — it raises the category average, which then flows into the weighted total. Enter the adjusted average in the calculator rather than the raw one, or you'll underestimate your standing.

How does extra credit affect my final grade?

Add the extra points to the relevant category's earned total before computing its average — it can push a category above 100% unless the teacher caps it. Even 2–3% of extra credit can lift a borderline grade over the line.

Can I still get an A if I bombed the midterm?

Possibly — run the 'what do I need' math. With the midterm at 30% weight, a strong final (often worth 30–40%) can still pull you up. The calculator shows the exact final score required, so you can judge whether it's realistic or time to aim for a B.

How weighted grades and 'what do I need' math work

Most courses don't average scores evenly — they weight categories: homework might count 20%, the midterm 30%, the final 50%. Your grade = Σ(category average × weight), so a 50%-weight final dominates everything before it. Understanding this is what turns "what do I need on the final?" from anxiety into arithmetic.

The needed-score formula: needed = (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w, where current = your weighted average so far (as a percent), w = the final's weight as a decimal, and target = the grade you want. It simply solves the weighted-average equation for the unknown final score.

Worked example: your homework/midterm weighted average is 82%, the final is worth 30% (w = 0.30), and you want an 85%. Needed = (85 − 82 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = (85 − 57.4) ÷ 0.30 = 27.6 ÷ 0.30 = 92% on the final. To merely pass at 60%: (60 − 57.4) ÷ 0.30 = 8.7% — you're nearly safe already, which changes how you allocate study time.

Practical tips: weights must total 100% — if your syllabus lists weights that don't, normalize them first. A dropped lowest score raises its category average before weighting, so enter the adjusted average. Limitation: curves, extra credit, and participation fudge factors aren't modeled — treat the result as the guaranteed path, with curving as a possible bonus.

How curving actually works: when professors curve, they rarely "add points" — they remap the distribution. The square-root curve (new = 10 × √old) is common: a 64 becomes 80, an 81 becomes 90, a 100 stays 100 — it compresses the top while rescuing the bottom. Linear shifts ("everyone gets +8") preserve rank order exactly. Grading on a true curve assigns fixed proportions (top 15% get A) regardless of absolute scores, which means your grade depends on classmates, not just mastery. Because curves are applied after raw scores are computed, this calculator's "what do I need" result is your guaranteed floor — curving can only help. The strategic insight: under a fixed-proportion curve, the marginal value of each study hour is highest near grade boundaries (the B+/A− border), not at the extremes — that's where rank order actually changes.

About This Free Grade Calculator

This free grade calculator figures out your average from assignments, quizzes, and exams — with or without weights. Enter each grade and its weight (for example, homework 20%, midterm 30%, final 50%) and the tool computes your weighted average instantly. It also answers the classic student question: "what do I need on the final to get an A?" — enter your target and current grades to see the score you must earn.

Weights must add up to 100%. If your teacher uses points instead of percentages, enter the points earned and points possible — the math is the same. Letter-grade cutoffs follow the standard scale (A = 90+, B = 80+, C = 70+, D = 60+) unless your class uses a different scale. Your grades are calculated entirely in your browser and never leave your device. 100% free, no signup, works on any device.
